Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) an industry leader in the field of smart mobility is the signatory of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IndianOil) the largest Indian energy PSU for the purpose of evaluating the feasibility of hydrogen fuel cells in India. This collaboration is a significant milestone in HMIL’s dedication to sustainable mobility, as well as the expansion of the Indian Green Hydrogen ecosystem.

Hyundai & IndianOil Collaborate for a Greener Future

Hyundai & IndianOil Collaborate for an eco-friendly future as an element of the MoU HMIL has transferred one of Hyundai the NEXO Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) in the direction of IndianOil. The NEXO the Hyundai’s top FCEV is set to go through rigorous testing in real-world Indian driving conditions for two years and will cover around 40,000 km.

The focus of the trials is the endurance of the vehicle, its reliability, as well as the efficiency of operating hydrogen powered vehicles that are operating in India. An extensive Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis will be performed, which will simulate the real-world scenario of use to determine operating and maintenance costs.

NEXO Trials in India

Hyundai NEXO is a cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) that combines emission-free capability with cutting-edge technology. It’s driven by a 95 kW hydrogen fuel cell that is and a 40 kW battery. Together, they provide an power output of 135 kW (approx. 183 PS) as well as 395 Nm torque. This enables the NEXO to speed up from the 0 to 100km/h speed in only 9.2 minutes. Equipped with a fully-filled tanks of hydrogen it provides a remarkable driving range that can reach 666 kilometers (WLTP cycle) which can recharge in less than five minutes. It is built on a specific FCEV platform and a dedicated FCEV platform, the NEXO has a range of sophisticated driver assistance systems (ADAS) and the aerodynamic style, as well as an impressive, technologically-rich interior that makes it one of the cleanest and most eco-friendly automobiles of its kind. In announcing the MoU signature the Ms. Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of HMIL and said “As the leading Indian intelligent mobility solution provider We have the commitment to continue to advance with tomorrow advanced technology. Through the signing of an Memorandum of understanding together with Indian Oil Corporation, a leader in the Indian energy sector We aim to integrate the world’s top Hydrogen energy storage technology and Indian know-how. Together, we will make the most to harness the potential of Green Hydrogen as a transformative energy source that is accessible cost-effective, sustainable, and affordable.

We’re confident that this alliance is a significant move in proving the value of hydrogen as a energy source that is sustainable in future.” In a statement on the partnership the Dr. Alok Sharma, Director (R&D) and Board Member at IndianOil said “As India’s biggest public sector energy company We at IndianOil are proud to serve as an active participant in the government of India’s goal to achieve the security of energy and decrease the imports of fossil fuels. We are convinced that Hydrogen fuel is an essential component of India’s green energy plan as well as fuel cell technology has tremendous potential to significantly contribute to the transition to net carbon neutrality. This partnership along with Hyundai Motor India is expected to allow us to carry out in-depth research on fuel cell technology, and accelerate efforts to create the benefits of a more sustainable mobility environment.”

Driving India’s Hydrogen Future

Hyundai’s NEXO is already an internationally acknowledged hydrogen-powered vehicle, and the Indian trial will test the adaptability of its technology to the local climate. This collaboration is one of the many initiatives Hyundai has in its vision of offering a broad range of propulsion options, such as ICE, CNG, Hybrid Electric, and, most recently, Hydrogen.

In addition, Hyundai is also working in partnership with IndianOil and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) to set up the cutting-edge Hydrogen Innovation Centre, which will offer infrastructure to startups as well as OEMs to evaluate hydrogen products, thus fostering innovations in the emerging field of. Through this move, HMIL and IndianOil are not just exploring the possibility of proving hydrogen as a feasible fuel as well as setting the stage to create a more sustainable, self-sufficient and a future-proof mobility system in India.
